2017 Kia Rio

Kia chose Paris to make the world debut of the all-new Kia Rio.  This will be the fourth generation Rio and we think they make a compelling argument for buyers looking for an offering in this market segment.

The Rio’s progressive new exterior and interior design was led by Kia’s design centers in Germany and California, in close collaboration with the company’s domestic design base in Namyang, Korea. The exterior appearance of the new Rio is defined by straight lines and smooth surfacing, giving the car a distinctive new look and more mature character than its predecessor. Its driver-oriented cabin is also the most spacious in its class, and – with larger, 325-liter cargo capacity (VDA) – it is more practical than ever before.

The new model will be the most technologically-advanced Rio ever produced, and is equipped with new cabin technologies, safety systems, and connectivity features. The Rio will offer both Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ integration, and will be the first car in its class to offer Autonomous Emergency Braking with pedestrian recognition.

The new Rio will be powered by a range of gasoline and diesel engines. In particular, the Rio features Kia’s latest three-cylinder 1.0-liter T-GDI (turbo gasoline direct injection) engines, offering high efficiency and low emissions. The lightweight nature of the new downsized T-GDI engines means the Rio benefits from keen front-end handling, with less mass and inertia for the car to work against under cornering.

2017 Kia Forte

The Kia Forte continues to impress, even in an incredibly crowded compact car market segment.  It is a testament to the vehicle itself and the automaker.

For this year’s offering, the Forte gets a fresh new look. It appears more modern than any of its competitors and looks really fresh and inviting.  It has a new 2 liters, four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower.  This adds wo more horses than the outgoing 1.8-liter engine and three more miles per gallon in the city diving.  Although it won’t win a race, it offers a comfortable amount of power for any situation.

The S sport version is a mid-level trim line with a sport tuned suspension and 6-inch alloy wheels.  The EX model is the fanciest with a 164 hp engine, standard leather seats, LED taillights and many other goodies.  Add the Technology Package and you get auto braking, forward collision warning and lane assist.  The 7-inch touchscreen will work with about any smartphone through Android Auto and Apple Car Play.

The Forte offers an all-around better vehicle in a competitive segment.  Car buyers know there are a lot of choices out there and are savvy enough to see a good deal when there is one to be had.  Well if that is on your agenda, look no farther.  The Kia Forte will not only not disappoint, it will impress.

Kia Forte gets sharp looks, more vroom

These days, the auto world is awash in compact cars at a time when consumers have switched their allegiance to crossovers and SUVs.

And the numbers show it: Overall, sales of smaller cars were down 6.9% so far this year through the end of August, according to Autodata. But one of Kia’s entry, the compact Forte, bucked the trend. Its sales rose 23.2%.

That’s impressive in a compact-car field dominated by some of the most famous nameplates in the auto business, starting with Honda’s redesigned Civic and Toyota’s sharp Corolla.

So Forte, a name that still doesn’t exactly roll off car-buyers’ tongues, has tried harder to play in the big leagues. Just like those other two models, Forte gets fresh looks. It now appears as modern as any car out there, although it doesn’t particularly stand out. A bad thing? Not really. The looks are likely to stay fresh longer.

Also new in the 2017 Forte is a 2-liter, four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower that adds two more horses than the outgoing 1.8-liter engine and three more miles per gallon in city driving.

We found it to be no speedster, but it offered a comfortable amount of power for just about any situation.

The S sport version that we drove — the mid-level trim line — had what Kia said was a sport-tuned suspension and 16-inch alloy wheels. Had we opted for the fanciest EX model, we would have gotten an engine with 164 horsepower. The Forte EX would have come with standard leather seats, LED taillights and other goodies.

With the $1,490 Technology Package, however, the S had some of the nicer touches. Our favorite most involved safety: the automatic braking system for emergencies, forward collision warning and lane-keeping assist. The 7-inch touchscreen is going to work with smartphones through Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Just for fun, there are little lights that illuminate the undersides of the door handles at night. We liked that.

So in the end, the Forte is an all-around better car, but it caught in a competitive field where buyers have lots of good choices. Kia knows it, so the brand has taken it traditional route of finding a way of swaying buyers by undercutting the rivals on price. The Forte starts at $17,340, including $850 delivery charges. That’s about $2,000 less than the cheapest Corolla at $19,365, or the Civic at $19,475, both including destination charges.

With its improved looks and solid features, the Kia would make a worthy choice.

2016 Kia Soul: Good for the Soul

We are nearing the end of the 2016 year, but one Kia classic is here too perfect not to stick around. The iconic Kia Soul was one of the first of its kind and has stayed true to form since its first release. You may remember initially seeing the Soul through the various hamster commercials used to publicize it.

The hamsters made the car stick out in a unique way, as if it wasn’t already unique enough. In the 2016 model year, an abundance of innovations and upgrades have been made to enhance the driving experience of the Soul. With 24 miles to the gallon city and 31 miles to the gallon highway, you can cruise wherever the wind may blow without breaking the bank. Not only that, but the exterior has been brought into a modern light with upgrades such as High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights that are not only appeasing to the eye, but gives you a better view of the road while driving at night time or in bad weather.

I have yet to scratch the surface on everything this phenomenal vehicle has to offer you’re passengers and you. The entire driving experience has been enhanced and brought to life and I urge you to make a trip down to your local Kia dealership and look into all of the other amazing things this car has to offer today.

2017 Kia Sorento

2017 is a matter of months away. What better way to bring it in than with the all-new 2017 Kia Sorento? No better way. It is back ladies and gentlemen and is the epitome of innovation. The newest Sorento model is already taking the vehicular world by storm and is expected to do amazing things now that it has been released onto the roads.

This year’s model is packed with everything you could want in a vehicle. With 21 miles to the gallon city and 28 miles to the gallon highway, the Sorento will take you and your passengers anywhere you want to go without breaking the bank. Anyone remember road trips as a child? Everyone squished together, holding half of your brother’s luggage and riding the hump in the middle? Well, no more of that with the new Sorento because it is nothing if not comfortable. A heated steering wheel, 14-way power adjustable driver’s seat, heated and ventilated seats, Nappa leather seat trim and materials made soft to the touch along with other features ensures maximum comfort not matter where you go.

There is so much more this newest model has to offer. I have barely scratched the surface. If you want a phenomenal vehicle that is the total package, from comfortable interior to high level performance, from sleek new design to abundance of room, then this is the vehicle for you. Go on down to your local Kia dealer to experience it for yourself.

I Spy

I am always wanting to spy the newest vehicles out there and we just spied a doozy.  The fun, quirky little hatchback that Kia has brought us is going through some mid cycle updates and we are trying to get a little sneak peak.

Kia does a good job camouflaging the biggest changes at both ends, however there are still some things we can see.  The new headlights seem to have a single projector at each corner, and what are possibly turn signals flanking the grille.  We see dual exhausts coming from the rear bumper.  The interior center stack appears to be hidden so we can assume that there will be upgrades to the infotainment center as well.

Judging from the tailpipes on the test car, we are thinking that this might be a turbocharged model.  It could feature the 1.6-liter turbo four cylinder with 201 horsepower and 195 pounds’ feet of torque.

It’s not clear what Kia has planned for the interior of its updated Soul but we can expect a few changes here, too. For example, we should see some new infotainment features and electronic driver aids added.

As this is only a mid-cycle update, we’re not expecting any significant changes in the powertrain lineup. The Soul currently offers two gasoline as well as battery-electric options here in the United States.

Look for a debut of the updated Soul late this year or early next. It should arrive as a 2017 model.
